After leaving my position as an executive with a Fortune 500 company to move
to rural Colorado, the first thing I noticed was most tax professionals were practicing
utter nonsense. Their tax advice was nothing but
timing
differences, which do not save income tax but merely
delay it.
35 years later nothing has changed. We still run into the same issue. 99% of the tax savings devices most tax professionals use are timing differences masquerading as genuine tax savings.
Methodology
To distinguish ourselves from the pack, and to develop services that provided more value than their cost, we set out to mine the tax code for genuine tax saving opportunities.
For decades Congress has been littering the tax code with tax preferences (and penalties) aimed directly
at professionals and small businesses. Preferences added specifically for favored constituents
generally occur on the sly, without fanfare, often as an earmark.
The tax code is the best system ever devised for a free people in a democratic nation, but it is a complex maze of preferences, penalties and regulations, and it gets increasingly more complex every year. The complexity is so enormous we regularly have to explain code to IRS agents ... even to high level agents.
We assumed if we located all preferences and compared various combinations in the circumstances they were intended to work in, and in various other circumstances, we could make a difference in bottom line tax liability.
