Incompetent Professionals?
The difference between us and other firms may be due to any
number of causes, but according to the IRS, a very likely cause is
incompetence.
According to IRS statistics incompetence is rampant among entire firms of tax professionals. Early in 2010, the IRS mailed stern warnings to ten thousand (10,000) offices of the worst offenders. They followed up with 2,400 office visits, and made some
phone calls to their homes. (Letter Here)
Then on April 8, the IRS issued
more information.
In addition to the 10,000 letters and 2,400
office visits, the IRS made an additional 2,600
additional office visits to a here-to-fore unknown additional list (of unknown size) of negligent or incompetent tax preparers. Based on my math and the same ratio, the IRS has identified at least 20,000 firms of incompetent tax preparers. So far ... 56 indictments ... 25 convictions ... 21 civil injunctions.
Now it appears there may be as many as 50,000 firms of incompetent tax preparers.
All of this led to the new IRS program for testing and licensing all tax preparers. (Here)
